    Living with ulcerative colitis (UC) can make mornings feel unpredictable. For many people, symptoms like urgency, cramping, fatigue or multiple bowel movements tend to cluster early in the day, making it harder to ease into daily routines. UC is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes inflammation and ulcers in the lining of the colon and rectum, and symptoms can vary widely from person to person.

    While medication is a cornerstone of managing UC, everyday habits—especially first thing in the morning—can influence how manageable symptoms feel. We spoke with two registered dietitians who specialize in digestive health to share practical, realistic strategies to try when you wake up if you have UC.

    1. Start Your Morning Slowly

    “Mornings can be especially challenging for people with UC because the colon is often more reactive early in the day,” says Serena Pratt, M.S., RDN. Mild dehydration and overnight fasting can concentrate stool, increasing rectal sensitivity and urgency, she explains. As you wake, move and start eating or drinking, the gastrocolic reflex can kick in, which may lead to cramping or multiple bowel movements.

    Give yourself time to gently ease into the morning rather than asking your body to “perform on command” before leaving the house. This may look like waking up 15 to 30 minutes earlier, enjoying breakfast and allowing unhurried bathroom time, suggests Pratt.

    Calmer mornings may also reduce symptoms later in the day, since stress can amplify gut-brain signaling and sympathetic nervous system activity, increasing urgency and gut sensitivity. “Stress can worsen UC symptoms, especially in the morning,” says Julie Pace, RDN. “When the nervous system is already activated, urgency, cramping and discomfort can feel more intense.”

    Rather than trying to overhaul your routine, Pace recommends small, repeatable practices that calm the nervous system: “Practicing mindfulness, spreading morning activities out and avoiding overexertion early in the day, can help reduce stress and support the gut-brain connection.”

    2. Rehydrate Gradually

    Hydration can be an important morning step for people living with UC. Even mild dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches and dizziness, says Pratt. Additionally, if diarrhea is present, “electrolyte losses can worsen feelings of weakness and lightheadedness,” she explains.

    Starting the day with water can help counteract overnight fluid losses, but Pratt cautions against chugging large amounts at once. “Drinking a large volume quickly can trigger the gastrocolic reflex and speed up motility,” she explains. “Small sips are often better tolerated.”

    For people who experience frequent loose stools, adding electrolytes may improve hydration. “Sodium and glucose help pull water into the body more effectively,” says Pratt. However, she suggests choosing a beverage designed for rehydration rather than a high-sugar sports drink, since very sugary drinks can worsen GI symptoms for some people during active diarrhea.

    3. Eat a Small, Predictable Breakfast

    What you eat and when can shape how reactive your gut feels for the rest of the morning. Pratt recommends “gentle, predictable nutrition” early in the day, especially if your symptoms are active. The GI tract can be more sensitive first thing, and larger meals or higher-fat foods may increase gut motility and worsen urgency in some people, she explains.

    On days when your gut feels more sensitive, “predictable” often matters more than “perfect.” Foods that tend to be gentler for digestion include well-cooked oatmeal, yogurt, eggs, sourdough toast or a simple smoothie without high-fiber add-ins, Pratt says. She adds that food tolerances are highly individual in UC, so it’s important to choose what your body tolerates best.

    If you notice coffee worsens urgency, Pratt suggests having it after you eat, reducing the amount, switching to half-caf or decaf or choosing herbal tea on more sensitive days.

    4. Be Consistent with Medications

    For people living with UC, consistency around medications can make a noticeable difference in how predictable symptoms feel, especially in the morning. “Taking medications as prescribed is one of the most important morning habits for managing UC,” says Pace. Skipping doses or changing timing can increase symptom variability and make mornings feel more unpredictable, she explains.

    Building medications into the same part of your morning each day—such as with breakfast or before brushing your teeth—can help reduce missed doses and support more stable symptom management, says Pace. If you’re experiencing unwanted side effects or symptoms are still present, check in with your health care provider, adds Pratt.

    If you live with UC, mornings can often feel like the most unpredictable part of the day. The gut tends to be more active after waking, and factors like overnight fluid shifts, stress and food choices can increase urgency and worsen symptoms.

    A consistent morning routine can help manage symptoms. Calm mornings, gentle rehydration, eating a small breakfast you tolerate well and staying consistent with medications are all meaningful ways to set the tone for your day. 

    These strategies can complement medical care, but they are not a replacement for it. UC is highly individualized, so it’s important to work with your gastroenterologist and a registered dietitian experienced in digestive health to tailor a routine to your symptoms, treatment plan and daily life.
