If you feel like you struggle with anger, you’re not alone: nearly 8% of adults in the US experience “inappropriate, intense, or poorly controlled anger,” according to a national study done by the National Institutes of Health. And some of the best ways to learn to manage your anger are through therapy or by taking anger management courses. Here’s where online anger management resources come in. As a licensed social worker and former therapist who’s spent the last three years researching online therapy, I can confidently say that there are online resources out there that are simple, effective, and affordable. I’ve compiled and tested a list of the best online anger management resources, so look no further than these eight picks to get you and your anger back on track.

What to Expect from Online Anger Management Resources

    • How much does it cost? Some self-guided courses on this list cost as little as $13, while therapy services can reach up to $200 or more per session.
    • Who is it for? For anyone who feels as though their anger is out of control or negatively affecting their everyday life.
    • Will insurance cover it? Some of the online therapy companies on this list, such as Thriveworks and Mindful Care, accept insurance; others, like Online-Therapy.com and Calmerry, charge subscriptions, or require you to pay per session out-of-pocket (like Mindful Care’s group therapy). You cannot pay for the courses on this list with insurance, with AngerCoach being a possible exception (but you will need to call to confirm).
    • How do we meet? The online therapy companies on this list offer video and audio sessions, while courses you access online and are often self-paced.
    • Is it confidential? Be sure to read through any company’s privacy policy to better understand whether it is HIPAA-compliant (HIPAA is the law that protects personal health information) and whether it shares any private information with third parties; we recommend opting out of data collection. Many online classes also advertise their confidentiality, so others (including employers) won’t know if you’ve taken a class unless you reveal it yourself.
    • What’s the time commitment? An online class will be a set number of hours. In therapy, you might find that just a few weeks of sessions help you manage your anger, or you might need to stay in therapy for months or even years.
    • Does it work? As with most things, you get out what you put in. If you go into anger management therapy or start a course willing and eager to change, you’re more likely to see results.

How Do You Know If You Need Anger Management Resources?

If you feel like you can’t control your anger or if your anger is negatively impacting your everyday life (like at work, at home, or in relationships), you might benefit from therapy for anger management or an online anger management course. These resources will teach you more about your anger responses and how to control those responses in a healthier way.

How I Review Online Therapy Services

I’ve spent years testing and surveying real therapy users and reviewing their experiences to help rate and share the best online therapy services. You can see a full breakdown of our online therapy research and testing process on Verywell Mind. Here is an overview of how I capture and evaluate firsthand experience and survey data.

    Firsthand Experience

I had 65 different people sign up for talk therapy with all 55 online therapy companies reviewed. Over the past three years, I’ve published 153 reviews  (here are our reviews for BetterHelp and Talkspace, for instance). I had my testers try out each company’s therapy services, and if the company offered other services (like couples therapy and kid or teen therapy) we tested those too.

I asked each tester to try each service for at least a month, which usually meant between two and six sessions at each company. I also asked testers to switch therapists partway through, if possible, in order to get a holistic idea of the offerings and quality of each company. My testers were located all across the United States and abroad, meaning I gained extensive information about each company’s services in a variety of areas.

    Anger Management Evaluation

Of the companies we tested and surveyed, we focused on the ones that provide anger management counseling and assessed these services at each company. In addition, we considered anger management courses and classes that fulfill court requirements and/or that can be completed on your own time, making them accessible to those needing guidance through anger management. We evaluated how successfully these courses and classes address anger.

    User Surveys

I surveyed more than 8,000 therapy clients who are currently using one of the 55 online therapy companies tested or who had used one in the recent past, as well as users of 27 different online therapy directories. I collected 350 different data points in which I asked users to evaluate each company’s services, from their therapist’s qualifications to whether they found a therapist who met all their needs to how they’d rate the company overall.
