Whether you’re looking to gain weight, lose weight, or merely want to track your weight over time, a bathroom scale is one of the simplest devices you can use to keep tabs on your progress. To find the best bathroom scales, we first consulted with four registered dietitians to learn which key features every model should have. Then, we spent over a month testing 45 bathroom scales, weighing ourselves at least three times weekly.

    Key Specs

    Item Weight: 3.7 pounds | Weight Capacity: 400 pounds | Connectivity: None | Dimensions: 13.5 x 14 x 1 inches | Power Source: Battery | User Capacity: Unlimited | Our Overall Rating: 5/5

    Who It’s For

Best for users who want a reliable, basic scale for monitoring weight that offers both a digital and analog dial display.

    Why We Love It

Ozeri’s Rev Bathroom Scale performed extremely well during our testing, earning our best overall spot. The setup process was simple and seamless; we had it up and running within a minute of taking it out of the box. We were also impressed with its lightweight yet sturdy feel and consistently accurate readings. While the one we tested had a more vintage look, this newer, updated design still has the same great features, with a more streamlined, sleek appearance.

Like the one we tested, we appreciate how easily this scale provides a clear reading, featuring both digital and analog dial displays, in both pounds and kilograms. The digital display features dark text and a backlit background, and the dial is large, so it’s easy to read, even in low-light conditions. And we appreciated that the reading stayed on the screen for several seconds after stepping off the scale, so we didn’t miss it. The scale also has an alarm feature to remind you to measure your weight at the same time each day.

    Potential Flaws

    • Although we like the scale’s simplicity and ease of use, it doesn’t connect to an app or offer any advanced features like storing data. However, we think it’s a solid basic option for those who prefer a more simple design.

    Most Valuable Insight

“I love how the scale looks and how sturdy it feels, especially considering its lightweight design. It features a digital display and a dial display that produces a pleasant, soft ticking sound during the weighing process. It’s super easy to use, easy to read, and thin enough to be tucked away.” —Gabrielle A., Verywell Fit product tester

    Who It’s For

Best for those who want a user-friendly scale that’s compact and portable.

    Why We Love It

After testing Taylor’s Digital Compact Scale, we think it’s a great option if you want a compact but sturdy and reliable option. We love that it’s ready to use straight out of the box, with AAA batteries included. It’s also calibration-free, making it simple to set up and use immediately. We found the display to be big and bright, with easy-to-read numbers.

With a small footprint, the scale doesn’t take up a lot of space, and we were able to easily move it from one spot to another. It’s one of the lightest scales we tested, and we were pleasantly surprised at how sturdy and durable it felt, despite its streamlined design. Plus, it comes with a stylish canvas bag, which we like for storing it away or taking it on the road.

    Potential Flaws

    • The scale has a small surface area, so it may not be an ideal option for those with very long or wide feet.

    Most Valuable Insight

“This is a very basic scale, but it’s sleek, small, streamlined, sturdy, and reliable. It’s very easy to read and the numbers are big and bright. In some cases, simple and reliable is best.” —Donna F., Verywell Fit product tester

Its readings were very accurate, and we love that the scale can automatically recognize different users based on weight differences, making it suitable for family use.

Best for those who want a low-maintenance, no-frills digital scale that’s durable and aesthetically pleasing.

    Why We Love It

During testing, Escali’s Bamboo Digital Bathroom Scale stood out for its sleek, attractive design and its high-contrast display. We like that the eco-friendly, durable bamboo platform adds a warm, spa-like element to a bathroom. And we appreciate that—unlike glass scales—it doesn’t show fingerprints or other marks, so it won’t require frequent cleaning.

The scale was also extremely simple to set up and use, with a large, back-lit display that’s easy to see, even in low light. The numbers stay on the screen for about 10 seconds, giving us plenty of time to read and manually record them if we want. We also appreciate the scale’s quality and durability: its sturdy construction gives us confidence that it will last a long time, requiring only regular battery replacements.

    Potential Flaws

    • During testing, we found that we needed to be centered on the scale to obtain accurate and consistent measurements.

    • This bathroom scale doesn’t store any data, so if you want to track your weight, you’ll need to do that manually with a fitness journal or app.

    Most Valuable Insight

    Why We Love It

During testing, Tanita’s HD-384 Digital Bathroom Scale impressed us with its precise readings, wide, sturdy platform, and sleek design. We noted that it was heavier than other scales we’ve tried, and it felt extremely stable and durable when we stepped on it. It’s also wide enough that we could spread our toes comfortably and still read the display.

We also like that the scale was ready to begin using right out of the box. Our measurements were ready in a matter of seconds, with no manual calibration needed. The scale features an instant-read function and shows weights in pounds, kilograms, and stones on the large, clear display. We also noted that the readings were consistent and accurate, showing precise data during our dumbbell test.

Best for users who want a straightforward, basic, budget-friendly device for monitoring weight.

    Why We Love It

After removing the safety link from the included batteries, the scale is ready to go right out of the box. Potential Flaws

    Most Valuable Insight

“Everything about the scale is very well done, and I don’t see it breaking anytime soon. It’s very safe and feels impossible to fall off, partly because it’s so low to the ground. This scale will last and work for a very long time.” —Boris K., Verywell Fit product tester

    • Self-calibrating

    • Compact, space-saving design

    Who It’s For

Best for individuals who may need to move their scale in and out of a storage space frequently.

    Why We Love It

Sometimes, moving around a scale can be a little frustrating due to clunky and cumbersome designs. We love Renpho’s Core 1S Body Scale because it proved lightweight and space-saving during testing. At under 2.5 pounds, it’s one of the lightest scales we tested, and we were pleasantly surprised at how sturdy and durable it felt despite its lighter weight. Plus, the non-slip material on the bottom of the scale helped us feel stable, despite the compact platform size.

The setup was quick and easy, requiring only the installation of the included AAA batteries. We appreciate that the scale is self-calibrating and features a low battery indicator and an auto-shutoff function. We found the LED display easy to read, even in low light, and the numbers remain on the screen as long as you stay on the scale, giving you plenty of time to get an accurate reading.

    Potential Flaws

    Most Valuable Insight

“This is the lightest scale I have ever owned! It’s also smaller, so I was a little worried about stepping on it. However, the anti-slip material on the bottom and wide base made me feel secure when weighing myself.” —Katrina C., Verywell Fit product tester

    Bathroom Scales We Also Tested

We tested 45 bathroom scales, but only seven impressed us enough to be included on our final list of recommendations. While these eight scales have some notable features, they didn’t meet our rigorous testing requirements.

    • iDOO’s High Precision Digital Bathroom Scale was easy to set up and use, and we found it very durable. However, we noticed that the scale’s display is hard to read against its blue background, and we didn’t like that the measurement is displayed as flashing text instead of a normal readout.
    • EatSmart’s Precision 550 Bathroom Scale might work for you if you’re looking for a basic scale that’s simple to use, but it doesn’t have additional features we would expect at this price point. Plus, we saw footprints left behind after weigh-ins during testing, which made the scale look dirty.
    • Fitbit’s Aria Air Digital Bathroom Scale received high scores for its display, readability, and durability, but it scored poorly for setup and data storage. The scale’s app is locked behind a paywall, so you need to pay for an additional subscription to access metrics.
    • INEVIFIT’s Bathroom Scale was very easy to set up and has an auto-calibration feature, but there’s no data storage. We also found that the bathroom scale’s display was a lot easier to read in darker lighting. While it’s very sturdy and accurate, we couldn’t justify the price point for its value.
    • Ozeri’s Precision II Digital Bathroom Scale and WeightMaster are bathroom scales with a larger weight capacity (440 pounds), featuring easy setup, batteries included, and no calibration required. However, the display colors the measurements with red and green depending on whether your weight increased or decreased from your last use, which may feel triggering for some people.
    • Eat Smart’s Precision+ Ultra-Wide Bathroom Scale features a wide platform and a very large, backlit display, and it’s extremely easy to set up and use. However, we noticed fluctuations of up to five pounds during back-to-back weigh-ins.
    • Tanita’s HD-662 Bathroom Scale is a cinch to set up and use, but we found the display’s flashing blue numbers were annoying and hard to read. We also thought the scale felt a bit flimsy and not very durable.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do bathroom scales lose accuracy over time?

Over time, bathroom scales can lose their accuracy due to general wear and tear from prolonged use and age. However, the changes in accuracy might not be significant. To get the best readings, place your scale in the same location every day to ensure precise measurements.

Which bathroom scale is most accurate?

During our testing, we found Ozeri’s Rev Bathroom Scale, Tanita’s HD-384 Digital Bathroom Scale, and Taylor’s Digital Compact Scale performed the best for accuracy. All three are basic digital scales that deliver consistent, reliable readings during our daily weigh-ins.

How often should you weigh yourself?

Weighing yourself once a week can help you stay on track and monitor progress towards your goals, says Balls. Or, you could weigh yourself daily and then take a weekly average, so you see longer-term trends, but don’t get distracted by the natural daily ups and downs, recommends Huntriss.

    Does humidity affect bathroom scales?

Depending on the model you use, humidity may impact the accuracy of your bathroom scale, but it shouldn’t be enough to provide a significantly inaccurate reading. It’s best to store your scale in a dry, room-temperature location as opposed to next to the sink or shower.
