    • Frozen foods are packed with nutrition, budget-friendly and convenience.
    • Dietitians recommend items like Greek yogurt bars and cauliflower rice that offer protein, fiber and nutrients.
    • Some frozen favorites, like veggie frittatas and chicken bites, cook up in minutes for fast balanced meals.

Between Walmart’s grocery delivery and frozen food aisle, healthy eating can be convenient, cost-effective and simple. From protein and vegetables to fruits and ready-made meals, frozen foods make it easier to eat well without spending a lot of time or money.

The idea that fresh is always better is outdated. In fact, frozen fruits and vegetables—picked and frozen at peak ripeness—can be just as nutritious, if not more so, than fresh produce that’s traveled long distances and been sitting on store shelves. Stocking up on frozen options can also make it easier to meet your nutrition goals, especially when fresh items are out of season or hard to find. Factor in the cost, availability and long shelf life of frozen foods, and there’s really no reason not to hit the freezer aisle.

Here registered dietitians built a list of nourishing frozen foods you can add to your next Walmart order to eat well without spending a lot of money or time in the kitchen.

Red’s Egg’Wich Turkey Sausage Breakfast Sandwich

“Protein at breakfast can help support satiety, stabilize energy levels and provide essential nutrients to start the day,” says Lauren Manaker M.S., RDN, LD. But if you don’t have time to make a high-protein breakfast from scratch each morning, keeping a few Red’s Egg’Wich Turkey Sausage Breakfast Sandwiches in the freezer can help. Each sandwich has 17 grams of protein from two egg “buns”, turkey sausage and cheese. “This sandwich is microwave-friendly, which is great during busy weekdays when I don’t have time to make a homemade breakfast but want to include protein in my meal,” says Manaker.

    Yasso Greek Yogurt Bars

Instead of denying yourself something sweet at the end of the day, stock up on options that are satisfying, low in added sugar and provide beneficial nutrients such as protein and probiotics. That’s where these Yasso Greek Yogurt Bars come in. “They’re a portion-controlled snack that not only helps satisfy a sweet tooth, but also provides some protein for satiety support,” says Manaker.

Each bar is rich and creamy, with just 10 grams of added sugar, 5 grams of protein and only 100 calories. Yasso bars are a great ice cream alternative to honor your cravings in a way that leaves you feeling good and supports your overall health goals.

Veggies Made Great Spinach Egg White Frittatas

If you’re a fan of Starbucks egg bites but don’t want to spend the extra time and money hitting up the drive-thru each morning, just keep a box of Veggies Made Great Spinach Egg White Frittatas in your freezer. “This is great for someone who needs a low-effort and savory option to incorporate into their morning routine,” says Patricia Kolesa M.S., RDN, who likes to eat two frittatas with fruit for an easy, balanced breakfast.

Each frittata has 70 calories and 5 grams of protein with a blend of spinach, tomatoes, onions and red bell peppers for a boost of veggies first thing in the morning.

    Green Giant Frozen Cauliflower Rice

If you’re one of the 90% of Americans who are not getting the recommended two to three cup-equivalents of vegetables each day, keeping prewashed, chopped and prepped frozen veggies like Green Giant Frozen Cauliflower Rice in your freezer will help. “It’s low in calories, naturally gluten-free and provides fiber and antioxidants while blending seamlessly into stir-fries, grain bowls, soups or even mixed with regular rice,” says Karolin Saweres, M.S., RDN, LD. While many frozen veggies can be added to savory dishes, riced cauliflower can be even more versatile. Manaker recommends adding it to your smoothies for a serving of vegetables that won’t change the flavor, color or consistency of your drink.

Just Bare Lightly Breaded Chicken Breast Bites

Frozen proteins make it possible to eat a balanced meal when time is tight, but some options are better than others in terms of taste, texture and nutrition. Frozen Just Bare Lightly Breaded Chicken Breast Bites have 16 grams of protein in each serving and can be prepped in the oven, microwave or air fryer (my favorite method!). “They’re a great quick protein option for kids and adults alike, whether adding to a salad for filling protein, having as a main entrée or mixing into pastas,” says Erin Person, M.S., RD, who loves that these chicken bites are lower in saturated fats and higher in poly- and monounsaturated fats than many other frozen chicken options.

    Great Value Frozen Berry Medley

In my house, fresh berries are either gobbled up the moment I get them home or shoved to the back of the fridge, molding before we find them again. To help us eat more fruit, save money and reduce waste, Great Value Frozen Mixed Berries are a freezer staple. “Instead of picking up multiple bags [of individual fruits], you just grab one bag at the store, and at home you can easily take one bag out of the freezer whenever you want to add fruit to smoothies, yogurt bowls and more,” says Juliana Crimi, RD. With a mix of blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and raspberries, each cup has 3 grams of fiber and is packed with anthocyanins, a group of antioxidants that support your heart, gut health, vision and more.

    Our Expert Take

These dietitian-approved frozen food favorites from Walmart prove that you can eat well without breaking your grocery budget, spending hours in the kitchen or making daily trips to the grocery store. By keeping a few of these frozen staples on hand, you’ll always have the building blocks for a nutrient-rich meal, no matter how hectic your week gets.
