    • Treadmill walking requires shoes with cushioning, shock absorption and strong arch support.
    • Podiatrists recommend brands like Brooks, Hoka, New Balance and ASICS for comfort and stability.
    • Proper fit, breathability and timely replacement help prevent discomfort and injury.

Whether you’re cranking up your treadmill’s incline for a sweaty power walk or logging steps during a work call, what you wear on your feet matters. Unlike outdoor walking, treadmill walking involves repetitive foot strikes on a firm, moving surface—placing unique demands on your shoes.

“Treadmill walking requires shoes designed with a flexible midsole and ample cushioning to absorb shock and support repetitive motion on a stable surface, reducing the risk of overuse injuries,” explains Suzanne Fuchs, D.P.M. Proper footwear also provides the support and stability needed to protect overall foot health and prevent common injuries.

Below, podiatrists share their  top picks for the best shoes to wear for your next treadmill walk.

    Brooks Ghost 17

Brooks may be best known for its running shoes, but several models also excel for treadmill walking—and the Brooks Ghost 17 is a top choice among podiatrists.

“The [Brooks Ghost 17] series is a favorite because it strikes an excellent balance between comfort, cushioning and responsiveness,” says Priya Parthasarathy, D.P.M. “It feels lively enough for brisk treadmill walks while still providing soft, reliable cushioning underfoot.”

The shoe features a cushioned midsole, reinforced heel support and Brooks’ GuideRails technology, which helps prevent overpronation and encourages proper foot alignment, adds Miguel Cunha, D.P.M. This combination supports repetitive movement on the treadmill while maintaining all-day comfort. Plus, with four width options available, it’s easier to find a truly personalized fit.

    Hoka Clifton 10

Wearing a shoe that promotes a natural foot roll can make every mile feel easier—and the Hoka Clifton 10 is a great option. Its signature Meta-Rocker technology enhances heel-to-toe push-off, which is especially beneficial for treadmill walking, says Nicole G. Freels, D.P.M., FACPM, C.Ped.

“The Meta-Rocker technology improves stride mechanics, and enhanced cushioning minimizes impact and pressure on the heel and plantar fascia for all-day comfort,” explains Cunha.

The Clifton 10’s lightweight design, durable rubber outsole (which minimizes treadmill wear), double-locking laces and rear-foot stability further support treadmill walkers—particularly those prone to ankle sprains or instability, adds Freels.

    New Balance Fresh Foam X

Another podiatrist-approved option for treadmill walking is the New Balance Fresh Foam X.

“The Fresh Foam midsole provides lightweight cushioning that adapts to your foot’s shape, offering a surprisingly responsive feel,” shares Fuchs. “The shoe has an outsole design for traction and flexibility, helping you maintain balance on the treadmill’s surface without sacrificing comfort.”

The shoe also provides excellent shock absorption, making it a strong choice for those who are dealing with foot pain or who need more impact protection, adds Freels. Overall, the Fresh Foam X’s blend of lightweight cushioning, flexibility and shock absorption makes it a reliable option for treadmill walkers.

    ASICS Gel-Nimbus 28

Looking for a shoe that feels like you’re walking on the clouds? The ASICS Gel-Nimbus 28 delivers plush comfort ideal for treadmill walking.

“ASICS shoes are great for treadmill walking due to their strong arch support, cushioning and stability,” says Cunha. He explains that the Gel-Nimbus features a flexible toe box, a firm yet responsive midsole and gel-padded footbeds designed to absorb shock, help prevent overpronation and reduce arch fatigue and discomfort.

Fuchs agrees, noting that ASICS’ gel technology provides excellent shock absorption, which helps minimize joint impact during repetitive treadmill walking.

What to Look For When Buying Shoes for Treadmill Walking

Before powering on your treadmill, make sure you’re wearing a sturdy pair of walking shoes that properly support your feet. Below, podiatrists share their top strategies for choosing the right shoes for treadmill walking.

    • Prioritize Fit and Comfort. A shoe should fit well in every area, including the heel, midfoot and toe box, says Fuchs. Walk around in them before committing to make sure they feel comfortable. If not, try a different pair. Working with a podiatrist can also help you find a fit that supports your unique foot structure.
    • Learn Your Foot Type. Whether you’re neutral, pronated or supinated, understanding your foot type is essential, as shoes offer varying levels of support and stability, says Parthasarathy. “If you’re unsure, a podiatrist can evaluate your gait and foot mechanics and help guide you toward footwear that best supports your individual needs.”
    • Look for Cushioning. “Adequate cushioning helps absorb the impact of each step, reducing strain on the heel and arch,” says Cunha. “Shoes with well-padded footbeds, especially in the heel and midsole, are ideal for walking on a treadmill.”
    • Replace Shoes Often. Even if shoes appear new, their internal structure may be worn down, says Freels. Keep track of when you purchase your shoes and plan to replace them every 300 to 500 miles.
    • Look for Breathable Material. Opt for shoes made with breathable materials, like mesh uppers, to keep your feet cool during workouts. “Good ventilation helps reduce moisture buildup and prevents hot spots, enhancing your overall comfort,” says Fuchs.
    • Arch Support. One of the most important features of a shoe is proper arch support, says Cunha. “Look for shoes with built-in arch support that fit your foot’s natural contours.”

    Our Expert Take

When it comes to treadmill walking, not just any shoe will do. Because treadmill walking involves repetitive motion on a firm, moving surface, your feet need ample cushioning, shock absorption and reliable arch and heel support. Podiatrists recommend styles like the Brooks Ghost 17, Hoka Clifton 10, New Balance Fresh Foam X and ASICS Gel-Nimbus 28 as some of the best shoes for treadmill walking.

Experts also emphasize a few key considerations when choosing your next pair: prioritize fit and comfort, understand your foot type, look for adequate cushioning and arch support, replace shoes often and opt for breathable materials. Selecting the right footwear helps keep your feet properly supported and comfortable as you log mile after mile on the treadmill.
