The new food pyramid prioritizes protein, with an emphasis on consuming meat, seafood, dairy and eggs. The guidelines also state that people should aim to eat three servings of vegetables, two servings of fruit and two to four servings of whole grains per day. All of this is a dramatic change from the previous recommendations, which prioritized vegetables, grains and lean proteins over red meat and dairy.

While grains are now relegated to the bottom of the pyramid, our nutrition editor and registered dietitian, Madeline Peck, RDN, CDN, noted that eating fiber-rich foods is essential for our overall gut health. “Both legumes and whole grains are a valuable source of fiber, a nutrient the vast majority of Americans are not consuming enough of,” she explained. And now that the pyramid has de-prioritized the entire category, the fear is that consumption could drop even more. Luckily, it’s easy to incorporate this overlooked nutrient into your diet if you have the right containers.

ComSaf’s glass storage jars are both functional and beautiful. More than 3,900 Amazon shoppers agree, with one commenting that the “glass is high quality and the bamboo lids look stylish.” The four jars in the set are 1.2 quarts each and equipped with airtight lids, meaning they’re perfect for storing nuts, seeds, oats, legumes, brown rice, quinoa and more.

Access to these ingredients is the first step to incorporating more fiber-rich foods into your diet. If there’s a jar filled with nuts sitting in your pantry instead of candy bars, you’ll default to the nuts. The same goes for breakfast. Fill a jar with oats, and watch how quickly you get used to eating this filling staple instead of sugary cereal. Making little changes here and there is a sure route to feeling full for longer and going to the bathroom more regularly. Such is the magic of fiber.

We also love that ComSaf’s jars are made out of glass, not plastic. We’re always looking to limit our exposure to microplastics and therefore relish any opportunity to use the former instead of the latter. Since the containers are also stackable, your messy pantry will look more organized. With more visibility and less clutter, it will be much easier for you to see what you have, so you only buy what you need.
