Growing up, my family was one of those households that never bought soda. Carbonated beverages were a rarity. That is, unless there was a special occasion—and my Pop Pop’s birthday immediately comes to mind. Instead of cake, we’d sing “Happy Birthday” over root beer floats, which happens to be his favorite treat.
As an adult, I’m still a big fan of the occasional soda float, even venturing to try regional spins such as the Boston Cooler. So, you can imagine my excitement when I found out that a retro soda from the ’80s is finally adding root beer to its lineup.
Slice Soda Releases New Root Beer Flavor

Slice Soda, a former PepsiCo brand bought by Suja Life, has been hard at work bringing nostalgic flavors to the soda aisle. The beverage brand released a new watermelon flavor and cherry cola soda earlier this summer, earning high praise from fans. When I was given the opportunity to try Slice’s new Root Beer, it was an immediate “Yes, please!” from me.
Upon popping open the can of root beer, I was met with that nostalgic, syrupy scent. I poured the soda over ice and let the foam settle before taking a sip. It’s worth noting that Slice Soda prides itself on being a healthier soda, leaning into the probiotic and prebiotic drink trend that’s taken over the beverage industry. The new Root Beer has only 30 calories and 3 grams of sugar per can.
With that in mind, I was pleasantly surprised at just how delicious it is. There was no chemically sweet taste that I’ve found in other better-for-you sodas. It tasted exactly like what I’d expect from a root beer—just slightly less sweet overall. I truly didn’t mind the toned-down sweetness, and, because of this, it would make a great base for an ice cream float.
Slice fans also took to the brand’s Instagram account to share their excitement over the new flavor. “Can’t wait to try!” said one fan. “Running to the stores.”
Another soda fan shared my sentiment when it comes to root beer floats, writing, “Poured over vanilla ice cream…don’t mind if I do.”
Slice Root Beer is now available at select retail locations, including Kroger, Ralphs, Dillons, Smith’s, King Soopers, City Market, Fry’s, QFC, and Harris Teeter. Make sure to also grab some vanilla ice cream to whip up a tasty float.
