When it comes to signature items, Costco rarely misses—especially where baked goods are concerned. The warehouse bakery’s new tray of variety dessert bars quickly took the internet by storm, and fans eagerly await the return of seasonal fall favorites, such as pumpkin pie and pumpkin cheesecake, every year.

However, with so many great limited-time desserts and bakery staples to choose from, Costco’s treat lineup can flip on a dime—much to fans’ dismay.

But one fan-favorite dessert is finally returning after five long years off the shelf. It’s a classic, and Costco members are ecstatic that this beloved item is back—or so it seems.

    Costco’s All-American Chocolate Cake Is Back—Sort Of

After being discontinued in 2020, fans are convinced that Costco’s legendary Kirkland Signature All American Chocolate Cake is back in warehouse bakeries—just under a different name with some slight tweaks.

“It’s almost the exact same cake,” said Laura Jayne Lamb, aka @CostcoHotFinds on Instagram, in a video featuring Costco’s new Chocolate Fudge Cake. “I’m not convinced that it’s not the same cake, just without the chocolate shavings.” And just like Lamb, fans of this cult-classic cake are stoked.

“Yay! We used to love that cake!” someone commented, before recommending that shoppers cut individual slices and freeze for longer lasting cake. “Can’t wait to try this one!”

“The cake grandma loved to get us is back!” exclaimed another fan. “You know what this means!”

Just like the original, Costco’s new Chocolate Fudge Cake features four layers of chocolate cake, each split with a layer of fudgy chocolate filling and topped with a rich fudge icing, which fans say is giving “Matilda” vibes. Like that iconic cake, the Costco classic is massive, too. As Lamb said on Instagram, “It’s nearly six pounds of chocolate fudge cake!”

The biggest complaint? Unlike the All American Chocolate Cake, Costco’s Chocolate Fudge Cake is missing a thick layer of chunky chocolate shavings. One fan shared their disappointment on Lamb’s post, saying, “It’s not the same without those thick chocolate shavings. Where are the shavings?”

Some fans who have already tasted the new iteration suggest that it doesn’t quite compare to the original. “It doesn’t taste the same,” wrote one disappointed fan, who said that it’s “not as moist and I miss the shavings.”

But, take the criticism with a grain of salt, because other taste testers are saying the cake is “so bomb!”

“The best chocolate cake!” another shared.

Costco’s Chocolate Fudge Cake retails for $24.99—an increase from the original, which was around $18 and included additional chocolate shavings. That said, it is a favorite for a reason, and if the new rave reviews are any indication, this cake is still worth the price.
