The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced on Nov. 6, 2025, that Costco has recalled about 941,400 bottles of its Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene sparkling wine because the bottles pose a laceration hazard.
Costco has further stated that unopened bottles of its private label Prosecco Valdobbiadene have a risk of shattering, even when not “handled or in use.”
How To Identify the Recalled Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene
The recalled “Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG” was sold in green bottles with purple labels and foil tops at Costco stores in the following states: Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. The UPC is 196633883742, and Costco identifies the bottles with the item number 1879870.
The wholesale club first alerted its customers to the recall on Sept. 12, and then again this week. The bottles at risk of shattering were purchased between April 25 and Aug. 26, 2025, but may still be in customers’ possession.
What To Do if You Have the Recalled Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene
If you have unopened bottles of the sparkling wine, you should dispose of them immediately. Costco says the safest way to do so is by wrapping the unopened Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene bottles in paper towels and placing them in a plastic bag before throwing them in the garbage. That way, if the bottles do shatter, you can avoid the broken glass in the trash can.
Because the bottles pose a shattering risk, Costco does not want customers to return the recalled prosecco to its stores. Instead, throw the bottles away, then return to the store with the letter Costco sent to its members announcing the recall to receive your refund.
To date, F&F Fine Wines International, Inc. (DBA Ethica Wines) has received 10 reports of the bottles shattering or breaking, resulting in one laceration injury.
