If you walked into the very first Cracker Barrel in 1969, in Lebanon, Tennessee, you would’ve found yourself at a cozy roadside rest stop just off Highway 109—complete with rocking chairs, board games, gas pumps (yes, really), a wood-burning fireplace, and shelves stocked with country food and gifts. And the main event? A menu stacked with classic comfort food, handwritten on a brown paper bag.

That menu featured staples like sausage, pancakes, grits, and “aigs” (intentionally spelled that way), along with a few signature dishes—including one called Hamburger Steak. While much of Cracker Barrel’s original concept has remained unchanged over the years (even the peg game was on tables from the very beginning), this particular comfort food favorite quietly disappeared from menus over time.

Now, for a limited time, Cracker Barrel is returning Hamburger Steak to its rightful place on the menu—kicking off the new year with a hefty dose of nostalgia and comfort.

Cracker Barrel Launches Its New Seasonal Menu

As part of Cracker Barrel’s new seasonal menu, guests can once again enjoy one of the original comforts of the Old Country Store: the Hamburger Steak.

    Cracker Barrel

If you’ve never tried it before, Hamburger Steak features tender, seasoned beef topped with a savory buttery garlic sauce and served with two or three classic sides, plus buttermilk biscuits or corn muffins. For the full Southern-style experience, it can also be ordered smothered with sautéed onions and rich brown gravy.

“Yesss, my husband’s favorite Hamburger Steak! Y’all are amazing! We truly appreciate you listening,” wrote one excited fan.

The seasonal menu is also bringing back another beloved breakfast favorite: Eggs in the Basket. You might know it by another name—Toad in a Hole, one-eyed Jack, or eggs in a frame—but whatever you call it, the dish includes two slices of grilled sourdough bread with a fried egg nestled into the center of each slice. It’s served with bacon or sausage and one classic side.

Both dishes are available as part of Cracker Barrel’s winter value offering, Meals for Two, which includes a choice of a shareable starter or dessert and two entrées for $19.99.

Fans are already loving the throwback menu. “EGGS IN A BASKET WERE MY FAVORITE!” one fan exclaimed. “So many guests are going to be so happy!” wrote another.

But it’s not all about nostalgia this month—there’s something new on the menu, too. Cracker Barrel is introducing a Spicy Maple sauce that adds a sweet heat to any dish. The sauce combines the restaurant’s classic syrup with a blend of spices and is designed to pair with everything from a breakfast burger to crispy chicken tenders.

Whether you’re craving a taste of CB’s early days or something entirely new, the restaurant’s latest menu offers plenty of reasons to stop by this month.
