Costco hauls may be a dime a dozen on social media, but when comedy great Leanne Morgan took to Instagram to share what she bought on a recent Friday night shopping spree, we definitely took notice. The comedian and her daughter showcase their purchases in a relatable video that runs the gamut from new jackets to mouthwatering pasta. We were delighted to see that some of the products she bought were even favorites of the staff here at EatingWell. Here’s a peek at what she grabbed (and why we love it).
It’s easy to go into Costco with a list, then leave with much more than what’s on it. Lobster tails, bulk packages of ribs, sheet cakes and bundled loaves of bread all seem like great ideas—until you get home and remember your kitchen is only so big. Morgan definitely loaded up her cart, but with plenty of pantry staples on her list, we’re sure she’ll find somewhere to tuck them away.
Rao’s Pasta Sauce
Keeping jars of your favorite pasta sauce stocked in your pantry is always a great idea. Like Morgan, we love Rao’s sauces, which are flavorful and made with simple ingredients. They’re great for an easy weeknight spaghetti bolognese, but also perfect as a sauce for chicken and fish.
Sourdough Pasta
Morgan wisely adds pasta to her haul—an obvious pairing for that pasta sauce—and chooses a sourdough version made by Bionature, known for its chewy texture and tangy flavor. Relatively new to the market, sourdough pasta might be a good option for those who find sourdough products easier to digest.
Cheese
Cheese is one of my favorite snacks and I’m glad it made the cut. Morgan stocked up on cheesesticks, Kerrygold Cheese Snacks and the Laughing Cow Light cheese wedges, which are lower in calories and saturated fat compared to the original version. I love pairing cheese with whole grain crackers and apple slices for a satisfying snack that provides protein and calcium, important nutrients for bone health.
Canned Chicken
Sometimes you need something quick for lunch or dinner, and canned proteins are a great option. Her daughter plans to use it—along with the Laughing Cow cheese—to make a favorite dip, but you can use it to create a variety of sandwiches, salads and wraps. Personally, I always love that canned proteins are shelf-stable and can be an economical choice for protein and iron.
Frozen Chicken Burgers
I do most of my work in my home, so that means lunch is whatever is in my refrigerator, freezer or pantry. My go-to is often leftovers, but when that gets boring I know that I always have some type of vegetable or chicken burger in the freezer. Morgan snaps up a box of Amylu White Cheddar and Jalapeno Chicken Burgers, which supply 20 grams of protein, perfect for fueling my afternoon work day. While a bit high in sodium at 850mg per burger, I’ll often choose to enjoy my burger as part of a large salad or with a side of veggies to try and tone down the salt factor.
Frozen Cod
I love the number of frozen items Morgan has in her haul, including a bag of Kirkland Pacific Cod fillets. Frozen fish is convenient and an easy way to incorporate some pescatarian meals into your week. Cod is lean and low in calories, but still provides a variety of nutrients like protein and B vitamins. Just be sure to thaw the fish following package directions and pat it dry with clean paper towels before cooking—that can help you achieve a nice sear and an even cook overall.
Avocado Oil
While olive oil tends to be my go-to, I do love having a bottle of avocado oil on hand, and it seems like Morgan does too. They grabbed a bottle of Marianne’s Avocado Oil and I’m guessing they’ll be using it to cook up a storm—a wise choice, as avocado oil is known for its neutral flavor and high smoke point, which makes it great for stir frying and roasting.
Frozen Fruit
Morgan says she starts her day with a smoothie, which was why she picked up a bag of Clovis Farms Organic Super Smoothie Blend during her shopping trip. It’s a blend of frozen blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, kale, spinach and bananas, which seems perfect for starting your day off on the right foot. Blend it with some plain Greek yogurt or milk and you’ll get a glass that’s packed full with delish nutrients.
