    • Sandwiches can be a healthy, portable, handheld meal.
    • Gary Oldman’s favorite sandwich is a turkey club.
    • Pack your sandwiches with veggies, lean protein, healthy fats and whole grains.

Breakfast, lunch or dinner, any time is a good time for your favorite sandwich. Really, what’s not to love about a handheld meal that can be stuffed with all the major food groups—fruits, veggies, protein, whole grains and dairy?

And sandwiches cross all demographics. Even celebrities have a favorite sandwich, as we often find out during Stephen Colbert’s “Colbert Questionert” (pronounced “questionnaire”) segment on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Case in point: Back in 2022, we learned that Sandra Bullock’s fave sammie is a BLT.

In the fall of 2025, during an interview with British actor, writer and director Gary Oldman, Colbert asked him the same question: What is the best sandwich?

“A club,” replied Oldman. He also added that one of the best club sandwiches he’s had was at the Dorchester, a London hotel. One of the Dorchester’s menus lists chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato and egg as some of the ingredients on their version of the sandwich.

Colbert also asked Oldman if he preferred turkey or chicken on his club. After giving it a quick thought, Oldman decided turkey was the winner.

A typical club sandwich is like a BLT—bacon, lettuce and tomato—but with a bonus source of protein. In this case, it’s turkey—like in our Turkey BLT Wrap. Aside from being a great way to use up any holiday leftovers, turkey is a source of lean, high-quality protein to help you power through the day ahead. Plus, turkey packs in plenty of nutrients, which means there are a few health benefits backing up this sammie.

When making a club, ideally, we recommend a whole-grain bread. This makes the sandwich heartier and more filling, thanks to the fiber in the whole grains. The fiber will also help stabilize blood sugar, especially when combined with the turkey’s protein. If you want your sandwich a little less “bready,” consider using a whole-wheat wrap, like we do with our Chicken Club Wraps. We also like to toast or grill our bread or wrap, since this really enhances its flavor.

Then there’s the veggies. While a club typically has lettuce and tomato, feel free to get creative, as this is where you can really pack in more nutrients. Cucumbers, bell peppers and sprouts would go great in a club. You could also swap the lettuce for spinach or arugula, or the tomato for roasted red peppers. We skip the traditional protein to pack more vegetables into our Ultimate Vegetarian Club Sandwich.

Clubs also traditionally have bacon. And while you could skip it, it’s just not the same without it. But thanks to its robust flavor, you don’t need much of it, either. And if you crumble it up, you can use less of it and still get some in every bite.

All the fillings without a sandwich spread can get pretty dry. A club typically uses mayo, but if you’re looking to add more nutrients, including healthy fats, you could consider swapping the mayo with hummus or guacamole—like we do in our Chicken Avocado BLT Wrap.

Sandwiches are fun because they’re versatile, portable and can be tailored to your tastes and moods. If you need some inspiration, check out our 21 Healthy Sandwich Recipes to Pack for Work.
