Hemp protein is packed with benefits. Research shows that hempseeds have a nutty taste and can provide essential amino and fatty acids, along with other minerals, fibers, and vitamins.

The risk of hemp protein side effects is low, but it’s also possible to have a hemp allergy. Read to learn more about the effects of hemp protein.

    Hemp Seed Allergy

For people with Cannabis sativa allergies, adding hemp protein to their diet can be dangerous. Researchers note that allergic reactions to hemp have been reported.

Although some foods are known for being common allergens, such as nuts and shellfish, any food can potentially cause an allergic reaction in a susceptible person. According to Mayo Clinic, common food allergy symptoms include:

    • Wheezing
    • Nasal congestion
    • Difficulty breathing
    • Tingling or itchy mouth
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Eczema
    • Swelling of lips, tongue, throat, face, or other areas of the body
    • Abdominal pain
    • Diarrhea
    • Nausea and vomiting
    • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting

Research shows that a hemp allergy, specifically, can cause severe anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening. According to StatPearls, signs of anaphylaxis include:

    • Shortness of breath
    • Wheezing
    • Stridor (a harsh whistling sound when air flows through the upper airways)
    • Low blood oxygen levels
    • Persistent throat clearing or coughing
    • Hives
    • Painful cramps or vomiting that are persistent

If you develop any symptoms of anaphylaxis after eating hemp protein powder, seek emergency medical attention immediately.

    Excess Fiber Side Effects

Fiber is crucial in a healthy diet, but according to Cleveland Clinic, too much of it at one time can cause bloating, cramping, gas, and constipation. And this includes hemp fiber.

Additionally, if you haven’t previously been eating a lot of fiber, even a single serving could cause digestive distress if your body simply isn’t used to it. To avoid these unwanted effects, increase your intake gradually over time and stick to a single serving, unless you know your body is able to handle more.

    Excess Mineral Intakes

Research shows that hemp seeds are an especially rich source of the minerals manganese and iron. As such, there is a risk of side effects and toxicity when consumed in large amounts.

One study found that a 100-gram serving of hulled hemp seeds has about 8 milligrams of iron and about 700 milligrams of magnesium, notes the U.S. Department of Agriculture. But the daily recommended amount for the average adult is 8 to 18 milligrams, according to the Office of Dietary Supplements.

The Office of Dietary Supplements warns that high-dose iron supplements can also cause gastrointestinal side effects. But the risk of excess iron side effects from protein powder is much lower than from iron pills, because it is ingested along with other macronutrients that help buffer its impact on the gastrointestinal system.

    Dangers of Hemp Supplements

All protein powders are considered supplements, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration doesn’t regulate them in the same way as food.

Because of this, you can’t always trust that what’s on the label is actually in the supplement, warns Harvard Health Publishing. A supplement may contain added sugars, artificial ingredients, or other allergenic ingredients or contaminants that the consumer can’t easily detect.

    The Takeaway

    • Hemp protein is made with hemp seeds, which are filled with essential amino and fatty acids, fiber, and other vitamins and minerals.
    • Side effects of hemp seeds are relatively low unless you have a hemp seed allergy, which involves symptoms like wheezing, itchy mouth, eczema, swelling, dizziness, nausea, and, in severe cases, anaphylaxis.
    • Eating too much hemp protein can cause an overload of fiber and iron, which can lead to unwanted gastrointestinal side effects.
    • Supplements like hemp protein are not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, so make sure you choose high-quality products that have been tested by third-party organizations.
