According to the National Institutes of health, nearly half of all Americans over the age of 30 has some form of periodontal disease. This can cause tooth loss and studies have linked periodontal diseases to conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, COPD and other respiratory issues.
Traditionally, treating periodontal disease centered around improve oral care, more frequent visits to the dentist and surgery. However, multiple double-blind, randomized clinical trials now show that supplementing with Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract (AGE) from California-based Wakunaga of America can significantly improve gum inflammation and bleeding in those with gingivitis and periodontitis.
The latest study was conducted at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and published in Biomedical Reports. The study recruited 300 otherwise healthy adults with moderate to severe periodontal disease and split into four groups—three taking various doses of AGE and one control group.
Over a span of 18 months, researchers found that participants in the AGE groups experienced marked reductions in periodontal pocket depth—a key indicator of disease progression—compared to those taking placebo. Statistical modeling confirmed improvements were mostly associated with participants’ baseline pocket depths, smoking status and AGE dosage.
It is believed that AGE exerts beneficial effects by reducing inflammation and the activity of oral pathogens through its unique sulfur compounds, the company said.
“Given the well-established connection between gum health and overall wellness, these findings suggest that AGE supplementation isn’t just an effective adjunct to oral care but can also promote better overall health. That’s definitely something to smile about,” said Jay Levy, director of sales for Wakunaga.
