    The Salomon X Ultra 4 Mid GTX is a top pick among podiatrists for its balance of support, protection and comfort. 

    “These lightweight hiking shoes offer SensiFit superior ankle support, sturdy All-Terrain Contagrip outsoles for uneven terrain, and OrthoLite plush cushioning to reduce joint strain on descents,” says Miguel Cunha, D.P.M., a board-certified podiatrist and foot surgeon. 

    Suzanne Fuchs, D.P.M., also a board-certified podiatrist, adds that the X Ultra 4 Mid GTX stands out for its supportive midsole and excellent traction—features that help reduce joint stress, especially on downhill treks, while also reducing risk of slips or falls.

    For long hikes, the shoe’s snug yet comfortable fit prevents blisters and pressure points. It also includes protective details like reinforced toe caps to protect against roots and rocks, and certain models even include a rock plate for added underfoot protection, adds Fuchs.

    Finally, both podiatrists praise its waterproof Gore-Tex lining, which helps to keep feet dry and supported in all kinds of weather conditions.

    What to Look For When Buying Shoes for Hiking 

    Podiatrists recommend several tips to keep in mind when shopping for hiking shoes:

    • Fit-Test Late in the Day. Make sure your shoes fit properly by trying them on later in the day, when your feet are slightly swollen and more fatigued, as this will reflect how they’ll feel during a hike, says Cunha.
    • Match the Shoe to the Terrain. For day hikes, opt for low, lightweight shoes. For heavy packs or rough terrain, choose stiffer, higher boots, recommends Fuchs. In wet conditions, waterproof shoes are best, while in dry or warm weather, breathable options will make you feel more comfortable.
    • Look for a Deep Lug Pattern on the Sole. Soles with deep treads help provide maximum traction to ensure you don’t slip even on uneven terrain.
    • Shock Absorption and Heel Stability. Shoes with good shock absorption and a ridge heel collar will keep your feet stable and comfy even on long hikes.
