There are few party appetizers easier than a bowl of chips and dip. Whether you’re serving up tortilla chips and spicy chorizo queso, or potato chips and cheesy ranch dip, any bag is pretty much a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.
Recently, we spotted a new way to eat potato chips, and dare we say, it’s even better than the classic chip-and-dip pairing. It has all the vibes of the viral potato chip Italian-style nachos, but with a buttery twist that will keep you reaching for more.
What Are Garlic Butter Chips?
On Instagram, @cheesegal shared a video of garlic butter chips, a genius way to zhuzh up your favorite potato chips with just a few simple ingredients. In the video, which has amassed over 400k views, the creator tosses a bowl of crispy chips in a garlicky butter sauce. They are then topped with herbs and a mountain of fresh grated cheese. “Yeah, I’d like to eat a whole plate of these,” the Instagrammer said.
The comments section was filled with fans who couldn’t wait to try the buttered chips, as well as those who are already in love with the flavor combo. “My husband just made these and it’s one of the best bites we have ever had,” said one person. “Made these twenty years ago for a party. [I] completely forgot about them! They were so freaking good!” added another. A few even suggested the herbaceous compound butter would go great with popcorn, too.
Considering the glowing reviews, our test kitchen had to see if the salty snack lives up to the hype. Spoiler alert: it totally does.
“I knew they were going to be good, but I wasn’t prepared for just how good they are,” said Natalie Gravois, Allrecipes producer and recipe developer.
How To Make Garlic Butter Chips
To build your loaded chip bowl, you’ll need to start with a sturdy base. Kettle chips are the go-to here because they’re thick and won’t get soggy under the weight of toppings. Look for Kettle Brand, like our test kitchen used, or Cape Cod, another thick-cut favorite our editors love. You will be working in batches to ensure every chip is coated, so you can prep by emptying half of the chip bag into a large mixing bowl and setting it aside.

This recipe moves quickly, so you’ll want to set up your mise en place. Measure about four tablespoons of butter, mince two cloves of garlic, and chop a couple tablespoons of fresh parsley. Additionally, you’ll want to keep ground black pepper, Parmesan cheese, and a cheese grater close by.
To start, warm the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Once melted, add the minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds, or until fragrant. Next, turn off the heat and stir in chopped parsley and a few grinds of black pepper. Allow the butter mixture to cool briefly before continuing.
Pour half of the mixture evenly over half of the potato chips. Then, grate your preferred amount of fresh parmesan on top of the chips. If your mixing bowl has a lid, place it on top and gently shake the chips to coat them. If not, toss with them a rubber spatula, taking care not to break the chips.
Finally, combine the remaining chips and butter mixture. Place the garlic butter chips into a serving bowl and garnish with extra grated cheese and a sprinkle of parsley, if desired.
So if you’ve been looking for a way to impress guests with a low-effort appetizer, look no further than garlic butter chips. Even better, you can whip up a batch for less than $10, making this a budget-friendly entertaining idea, too. Now, if you need us, we’re off to go make another bowl.
