Tillamook is a big player in the cheese world, but the brand’s ice cream deserves just as much hype. It’s earned high praise from professional chefs, and we even turn to the brand’s experts for help preventing freezer burn. This cheese company certainly knows ice cream.
But maybe Tillamook doesn’t know how much sadness it has brought our editors. The latest news from the Oregon coast is bittersweet: Tillamook has discontinued one of our all-time favorite products.
Tillamook Discontinues Ice Cream Sandwiches
We were actually working on a story about our favorite flavors of Tillamook’s ice cream sandwiches—an all-star lineup of Vanilla Bean, Chocolate Mudslide, Oregon Strawberry, Salted Caramel, and Mint Chocolate Chip—when we got the news from a company spokesperson.
That’s not the only Tillamook news we have to share, but first, let us pay our respects to a dessert that, as editor Bailey Fink put it, “is top tier.”
Or, as editor Mary-Linh Tran said, “I’m afraid I may not be able to eat [ice cream sandwiches] in any other way again.” An Oregon Strawberry fan, Tran said what makes this sandwich so superior is the “wonderful, creamy, strawberry-packed ice cream nestled between two chocolate-lined waffle cone cookies that remind me of the delicious chocolate bit at the end of a sundae cone.”
Tillamook’s ice cream sandwiches are smaller than other brands’, but the dessert is packed with flavor. More than once, I’ve passed these off as the after-dinner dessert for guests. They’re that good because, as community editor Ansley Emmet said, “It’s a fancy, small-batch creamery vibe.”
“I love the wafer cookies,” Emmet added. “They add this rich, layered texture you never get in a typical store-bought sandwich. I used to think of ice cream sandwiches as those sad vanilla-and-chocolate situations, but this is the grown-up version, and I’m obsessed.”
Tillamook likely knows how obsessed its fans are (The company has won award after award after all.) and how shocking this news will be for ice cream lovers. That’s why Tillamook also shared this tidbit with Allrecipes last year: Something new is coming.
“The brand has something very exciting in the works, set to be released next year,” said a brand spokesperson. And now, we know what is it. Tillamook just launched a brand-new line of ice cream bars. Even better: The lineup includes a couple of those core flavors that were featured in the ice cream sandwiches, such as Vanilla Bean and Mint Chocolate Chip.
Bars aren’t sandwiches, we know. But if these are half as good as those sandwiches, we’re in for a real treat.
