Audience at Aufguss USA Nationals
Hydrothermal wellness is changing.
What was once considered a passive amenity — a sauna, a steam room, a cold plunge — is becoming structured, social, and intentionally programmed.
This shift sits at the heart of the Hydrothermal Initiative’s 2026 trend, Guided Rituals, Free Bathing. In May, this will be on full display at the 2026 Aufguss USA Nationals in New York City. The USA is one of twenty countries competing for places in the Aufguss WM Championships taking place in Berlin later this year.
From Sauna Session to Performance Ritual
Aufguss, a European sauna tradition combining heat, scent, music, and towel choreography, has evolved into a globally recognized format for guided thermal experiences.
What began as a simple infusion ritual is now a fully immersive, often theatrical practice led by trained sauna masters.
Taking place May 19–21, the Nationals will be hosted across two venues operated by Bathhouse:
-
-
- Show Aufguss Competition (May 19–20) at Bathhouse Brooklyn
- Modern Classic Cup (May 21) at Bathhouse Flatiron
-
Together, these events bring leading U.S. sauna masters into both theatrical and traditional formats, judged on technique, storytelling, and guest experience.
Programmed Environments, Not Passive Amenities
Aufguss is a clear signal of how hydrothermal spaces are evolving into programmed environments.
Guests are no longer simply entering a sauna — they are attending scheduled sessions designed to engage the senses, create shared experience, and deepen connection.
Like boutique fitness, these sessions create structure, repeatability, and a compelling reason to return — while opening the door to ticketed experiences and stronger guest engagement.
A Breakthrough Moment for the U.S. Market
U.S. sauna culture is rapidly catching up to its European counterparts, where Aufguss has been part of the wellness landscape for over a decade.
Following its strong inaugural showing, Team USA has earned expanded qualification slots for the Aufguss World Championships in 2026. For the first time, the top two solo performers and top two teams will advance, creating a larger U.S. presence on the global stage.
This is a significant milestone for a first-time participating nation and a clear signal of the momentum behind sauna culture in the United States.
