Butter Road Walk

Start your 10-kilometer linear walk at either Schull or Ballydehob or, for the fitter among you, make the 20-kilometer trek back to either trailhead. A portion of this route follows the Old Butter Road, the Bridle Road. Before the 1820s, this road was the only one leading eastward from Schull. It established a connection between Mizen and Cork, home of the renowned 1769 Butter Market.

Once you’ve studied the map at the trailhead at the East End parking lot in Schull, continue past Cadogan’s Strand and turn right to arrive at the Mill House. When you get to the green lane, keep an eye out for the Idle Bridge on your right before crossing the newly constructed footbridge. Take in the breathtaking views of Schull Harbour and Mount Gabriel as the course climbs. You get to a paved road after passing two farmyards, and you should head directly towards Ballydehob, following the amber arrows.

Proceeding from the Ballydehob Trailhead next to the Community Centre, cross the renowned 12-arch Ballydehob bridge and ascend the stairs on the right. Keep an eye out for the yellow arrows as you follow the trail to the left. About 4.5 kilometers later, you get to the Butter road, which is located right before the Stouke Burial Ground. Proceeding westward, you follow the Butter road’s green lane, which leads to Mill House.
